San Francisco 49ers head coach Kyle Shanahan told reporters on Sunday that quarterback Jimmy Garoppolo will miss the rest of the season after suffering a broken left foot during Sunday’s 33-17 victory over the Miami Dolphins. Garoppolo was sacked for a 10-yard loss near the end of San Francisco’s first drive of the game, when Dolphins defensive lineman Jaelan Phillips appearing to land on Garoppolo’s foot. Garoppolo was carted off after suffering the injury on his team’s opening drive. Said Shanahan: “Just hearing it, it was pretty crushing. We know what Jimmy’s been through, how hard he’s worked at this.” Shanahan said Garoppolo “broke a few things” in his foot, and will need surgery.

Garoppolo has been able to avoid serious injuries this season, although he did take a hard hit to the knee in a Week 12 win over the New Orleans Saints. The 31-year-old has missed significant playing time over his 49ers career. He missed the rest of the 2018 NFL season after tearing his left ACL in Week 3, and missed significant time in 2020 with a high ankle sprain, as well as missing one game last season with a calf injury. Last offseason, he underwent shoulder injury that kept him out of training camp.

Garoppolo entered 2022 as the 49ers backup QB behind Trey Lance, but took over the starting spot after the second-year quarterback suffered a season-ending ankle injury. During Sunday’s game vs. the Dolphins, rookie Brock Purdy replaced Garoppolo.
